Extinction Rebellion protesters block traffic on busy bridges across Canada

Climate change activists Extinction Rebellion have organized a series of protests to block busy bridges to traffic across Canada.

The environmental campaigners, known as XR, seek to draw attention to the “climate emergency” and want to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

It plans to shut down some of Canada’s busiest bridges on Monday, in line with protests around the world; including the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge over Halifax Harbour, the Burrard Street bridge in Vancouver and the Prince Edward Viaduct in Toronto, by having protesters lie down or sit in traffic lanes, according to The Canadian Press.

Halifax’s Macdonald Bridge was closed to vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic for much of Monday morning as fewer than 100 XR members gathered for a protest, CTV News Atlantic reports.

The demonstration forced many commuters to take alternate routes to work and fueled congestion on main arteries throughout Halifax and Dartmouth.

CTV News Atlantic reporter Amy Stoodley, who was at the protest, said around 15 protesters had been arrested and released without charge by around 11.30 a.m. ET.

The bridge was closed to traffic just before the protesters arrived on scene and police blocked their access to the bridge.

About 40,000 vehicles use the Macdonald bridge daily along with about 1,200 people who bike or walk across the span.

In Toronto, dozens of protestors shut the Prince Edward Viaduct connecting a main road in the east of the city to downtown Toronto. The demonstration, which was due to finish at 10 a.m. ET, still had protesters in place by 11.30 a.m.

On the other side of the country police in Victoria, B.C., say they are prepared for another XR protest at the Johnson Street Bridge, CTV Vancouver Island reports.

Organizers said the action will close the Johnson Street Bridge to traffic from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The #BridgeOut campaign points out that the bridge to the future is being demolished by big oil, and oily politicians,” said a Facebook page organizing the event.

“This escalation of tactics is the minimum of what’s necessary to give young people a fighting chance at a decent future. We regret that ordinary people will be frustrated by the commute disruption, but the collapse of human society would be a much bigger inconvenience.”

And in Edmonton, a handful of XR protesters linked arms to block the Walterdale Bridge Monday morning to demand action on climate change.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, criticizing the action on Twitter, noted that traffic backups meant hundreds of cars were idling for no good reason.

The Edmonton protest is one of 60 happening around the world on Monday under the umbrella #BridgeOut, according to CTV News Edmonton.

Meanwhile in London, England, police arrested 21 climate change activists on Saturday and Sunday on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance. Further protests took place in London on Monday.

The arrests come as protesters in Berlin and Amsterdam blocked roads ahead of what is being described as widespread demonstrations.

Last week, XR attempted to spray fake blood on a British government building in London, using an out-of-commission fire engine to drench the front of the Treasury building. SOURCE

Ackerman: “We will never give up on the vision of one day having a wind farm in the County”

Image result for deaf ears
Prince Edward County has declared a climate emergency but White Pines Windfarm is a litmus test of Council’s sincerity

Oct 7, 2019

After much thought, about what I was planing to say to you today, I realized that all of this has been said before and has repeatedly fallen on deaf ears.

I  hope  most of you have come to  realize that destroying a wind farm is  completely  senseless and insane. If you don’t realize it by now,   you certainly will in the near future when you will suffer the effects of climate change  the same as the rest of us.

Even though our small  wind farm on its own  was not going to  save  the world, at least it was something positive during  this  negative and scary  time.  A functioning wind farm  would have  put the County on the map as being an area that truly cared about the fate of the planet, and stepping forward in a positive move. But,  instead,  we look like fools, moving backwards in a time of such uncertainty.

I have done the best I can to draw attention  to the benefits of renewable energy  and specifically wind. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon either. Sadly, I  must  face  the unfortunate and discouraging fate of White Pines that is now on the horizon, and with that, knowing the truth that  everything and everyone loses  because of this.  There are no winners There is no human   victory: every one and every living creature loses.

When I  attended the Climate strike  in Halifax  just over a week ago, I  was given great hope by what I saw.   Being   a part of  ten thousand  singing dancing chanting   strong people of every possible age, made me feel encouraged that just because some people  around the County don’t get it there are many  millions that do.   Nearly eight million participants in  185 Countries,  all demanding, loud and clear , that we deserve a livable planet and   it is time to change our ways.   When I left Nova Scotia I was enlightened, and re charged  by the positive energy. Despite how backwards  things are here in the County,  I am truly inspired  by  the actions of so many   people worldwide all recognizing that we can do something.  And WE ARE!

As a supporting member of the Green Party here in the Quinte region, I am  among many  people who are not just waiting around for someone else to do  something —just like Angella and Annnette,  and   the members of the County Sustainability Group, the local Fridays For Future ,  and many individuals.

We will persist  and we will continue to grow in numbers.  We will never give up on the vision of  one day having a wind farm in the County; and someday in the future  to be able to boast proudly that we are a part of the  movement forward.

Pollinator Sanctuary: A new sustainable solution model from Canada

The concept could not only help in providing forage, shelter and nesting places for local bees and birds, but also play a pivotal role in conserving local wildlife

Pollinator insects play a huge role in achieving cross pollination in a wide diversity of crops and plants that are important to both, human ecology and economy.

Three distinct global industries namely agriculture, forestry and  apiculture are directly and indirectly dependent upon pollination services provided by biological agents or vectors such as different species of insects, molluscs (such as snails and slugs), birds (like humming bird species) and mammals (such as bats).

Insects such as bees, moths and butterflies, certain species of flies, beetles, wasps and ants play a significant important role in cross pollination in various important crops and plant species.

Among insects, bees play the most important role in providing pollination services to a wide diversity of plants on which we are dependent for maintaining the stability of both our ecosystem as well as our global economy.

However, it is quite unfortunate that honey bees, particularly, the native bees, are demonstrating an alarming decline around the globe due to a number of anthropogenic factors.

According to researchers from around the planet, some of the causal factors cumulatively adding to the global bee decline include:

    • Industrial agricultural practices like overuse of pesticides and fertilisers
    • High level of pollution
    • Rapid change in our traditional land use patterns
    • Climate change
    • Colony collapse disorder
    • Rapid rise in bee parasitic diseases
    • Lack of suitable bee habitats and nutrition due to loss of their host plant species for adequate supply of nectar and pollen throughout the season
A pollinator sanctuary

Like all other continents, North America too is being impacted by this alarming decline of bee populations causing panic in the agriculture, apiculture and forestry industries spread across the continent.

The loss of huge colonies of honey bees negatively impacting apiculture; and more importantly native and endemic bee species from the continent being almost pushed towards the verge of extinction.

Therefore, it is quite important that a comprehensive bee conservation platform be developed with new insights and technologies to help conserve farmer-friendly insect pollinators like the honey bees and native bees.

Recently, an applied research organisation named Farming Smarter from the Canadian province of Alberta has come up with a simple, innovative, low cost, long-term, sustainable and environment-friendly, field-level initiative and concept called a ‘pollinator sanctuary’.

A pollinator sanctuary can prove to be a powerful technology in the field of pollinator insect conservation, with special emphasis on honey bees and native bees. The Pollinator Sanctuary project is funded by the well-respected provincial funding programme titled ‘Canadian Agricultural Partnership’ to investigate a new sustainable and innovative technology platform for bee conservation. NDP ‘astonished’ by government’s challenge to compensation order for First Nations children

Government was ordered to pay $40,000 to each child apprehended or taken from their homes on reserve

Charlie Angus rises during Question Period in the House of Commons on Feb. 21, 2019 in Ottawa. Angus is currently running for re-election for the NDP for the riding of Timmins-James Bay. (Adrian Wyld/The Canadian Press)

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is facing criticism after the federal government announced it would appeal a Human Rights Tribunal ruling about First Nations children harmed by underfunding of the on-reserve child welfare system.

In September, the tribunal ordered the federal government to pay $40,000 to each child — the maximum allowed under the Canadian Human Rights Act —  who was apprehended or taken from their homes on reserve, no matter what the reason.

In a statement released by his office, Indigenous Services Minister Seamus O’Regan said the government agrees that affected individuals should be compensated — but it wants time to “address important questions and considerations such as who is to be compensated and the role of the Tribunal.”

Charlie Angus, NDP candidate in the riding of Timmins-James Bay, says that the government’s response proves Trudeau’s approach to Indigenous relations is similar to those of his predecessors, rather than the new approach to reconciliation he had previously promised.

Here is part of his conversation with As It Happens guest host Nil Köksal.

Mr. Angus, Justin Trudeau says time is needed to get this right. What do you say to Mr. Trudeau?

Well, I think Mr. Trudeau has had an enormous amount of time to block, to interfere, to use lawyers against the human rights tribunal. But what he’s actually doing at court is, their filing says that if they have to stop recklessly discriminating against Indigenous children, it will cause irreparable harm.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s government is challenging a decision by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to compensate First Nation children for under-funding the on-reserve child welfare system. (Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press)

So Mr. Trudeau is not about getting this right. This is about the long and dismal pattern of the Trudeau government, the Harper government, the Chrétien government, going all the way back, of saying that they can decide whether or not they have to comply with basic obligations to children.

We are in the midst, as you very well know, of an election campaign, and mistakes have been made in the past. Mr. Trudeau acknowledged that and has before. Why not wait till the election period is over?

Well, Mr. Trudeau is not waiting. … When the first ruling came down at the Human Rights Tribunal, we were fully hopeful Mr. Trudeau would accept it. Instead, they fought it every step of the way and the result of those four noncompliance orders was the death of over a 102 First Nation children in Ontario alone.

I think what people really need to understand is there’s nothing theoretical about this. The broken foster care system is a system of hopelessness and abuse. And we lose children all the time in it. And every step of the way this government has opted for lawyers to fight against their obligations to ensure that every child, on reserve or off reserve, has access to fair services. And they will not meet those tests and they will fight. MORE

Police liable for battery, unlawful arrest in Caledonia counter-protest, says SCC

Top court says police can’t arrest those acting lawfully to prevent a breach of peace

The Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick

Police do not have a common law power to arrest someone acting lawfully to prevent an apprehended breach of the peace, a unanimous Supreme Court ruled today in a decision that will affect police powers in protests.

In Fleming v. Ontario, the Supreme Court found that a counter-protester’s arrest at a 2009 Six Nations blockade was unlawful.

“It’s a great day for civil liberties in Canada,” says Sean Dewart of Dewart Gleason LLP in Toronto, who acted for the intervener Canadian Civil Liberties Association in the case.

“The court could not have spoken more clearly about the common law power to arrest for apprehended breach of the peace. The judgment was remarkable for its clarity in setting out the importance of liberty for everyone, but particularly for people who are engaged in legitimate political protest.”

Today’s decision will curtail common law arrest powers in the absence of crime and resist “the likelihood of another G20 disgrace,” Dewart says. This use of purported arrest powers “was the fig leaf that police services used” in responding to protests that attended the G20 summit in Toronto in 2010, which resulted in the largest mass arrest (of more than 1,000 individuals) in Canadian history.“They can’t do that again.”  MORE

5G Wireless Technology Is War against Humanity

Disclosure about 5G — and its considerable risk for humanity — is occurring within the United Nations. This is thanks to longtime UN staff member and whistle-blower Claire Edwards, who recently contacted me with this powerful story which touches all of humanity and our shared future. Watch the interview above, or on YouTube here or on Facebook here. – Josh del Sol Beaulieu

The first eight months of WWII with no fighting was called The Phoney War. Using millimetre waves as a fifth-generation or 5G wireless communications technology is a phoney war of another kind.

This phoney war is also silent, but this time shots are being fired – in the form of laser-like beams of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from banks of thousands of tiny antennas[1] – and almost no one in the firing line knows that they are being silently, seriously and irreparably injured.

In the first instance, 5G is likely to make people electro-hypersensitive (EHS).[2] Perhaps it was sitting in front of two big computer screens for many of the 18 years I worked at the UN that made me EHS. When the UN Office at Vienna installed powerful WiFi and cellphone access points – designed to serve large, public areas – in narrow, metal-walled corridors throughout the Vienna International Centre in December 2015, I was ill continuously for seven months.

I did my best for two and a half years to alert the UN staff union, administration and medical service to the danger to the health of UN staff of EMR from these access points, but was ignored. That’s why, in May 2018, I took the issue to the UN Secretary-GeneralAntónio Guterres[transcript]. He is a physicist and electrical engineer and lectured on telecommunications signals early in his career, yet asserted that he knew nothing about this. He undertook to ask the World Health Organization to look into it, but seven months later those public access points remain in place. I received no replies to my many follow-up emails.

As a result, I welcomed the opportunity to join the effort to publish an International Appeal to Stop 5G on Earth and in Space because it was clear to me that, despite there having been 43 earlier scientific appeals, very few people understood the dangers of EMR. My experience as an editor could help ensure that a new 5G appeal, including the issue of beaming 5G from space, was clear, comprehensive, explanatory, and accessible to the non-scientist. The International Appeal to Stop 5G on Earth and in Space is fully referenced, citing over a hundred scientific papers among the tens of thousands on the biological effects of EMR published over the last 80 years.[3]

Having spent years editing UN documents dealing with space, I know that outer space is hotly contested geopolitically and any untoward event involving a military satellite risks triggering a catastrophic response.[4] Space law is so inadequate – just one example is the complexity of space liability law[5],[6] – that we could really call the Earth orbits a new Wild West. China caused international consternation in 2007 when it demonstrated an anti-satellite weapon by destroying its own satellite. Space debris is the main concern among space-faring nations, with a so-called Kessler syndrome positing a cascade of space debris that could make the Earth orbits unusable for a thousand years.[7] Does launching 20,000+ commercial 5G satellites in such circumstances sound rational to you?

I live in Vienna, Austria, where the 5G rollout is suddenly upon us. Within the last five weeks, pre-5G has been officially announced at Vienna airport and 5G at the Rathausplatz, the main square in Vienna, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors to its Christmas market each December and skating rink each January, which are special treats for children. Along with birds and insects, children are the most vulnerable to 5G depredation because of their little bodies.[8]

Friends and acquaintances and their children in Vienna are already reporting the classic symptoms of EMR poisoning:[9] nosebleeds, headaches, eye pains, chest pains, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, tinnitus, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, and cardiac pain. They also report a tight band around the head; pressure on the top of the head; short, stabbing pains around the body; and buzzing internal organs. Other biological effects such as tumours and dementia usually take longer to manifest, but in the case of 5G, which has never been tested for health or safety, who knows?[10]

Seemingly overnight a forest of 5G infrastructure has sprouted in Austria. In the space of three weeks one friend has gone from robust health to fleeing this country, where she has lived for 30 years. Each person experiences EMR differently. For her, it was extreme torture so she and I spent her last two nights in Austria sleeping in the woods. Interestingly, as she drove across southern Germany, she suffered torture even worse than in Austria, while in northern Germany she had no symptoms at all and felt completely normal, which suggests that there has been as yet no 5G rollout there.

There are no legal limits on exposure to EMR. Conveniently for the telecommunications industry, there are only non-legally enforceable guidelines such as those produced by the grandly named International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which turns out to be like the Wizard of Oz, just a tiny little NGO in Germany that appoints its own members, none of whom is a medical doctor or environmental expert.[11]

Lawless Trump-Canada Connections

Canada recently seized and sold $30 million worth of Iranian properties in Ottawa and Toronto, a gross hypocrisy explains Yves Engler in light of oversights of more flagrant US and Israel terror victims. See this.

But the behaviour of Canada Foreign Affairs in joining the lawless US war of sanctions, embargos and military threats against Iran goes deeper than hypocrisy.

It is another vassal-state violation of international law on behalf of US rogue policies around the world against majority world societies not fully subjugated to US corporate-profit rule – now against China, against Venezuela, and against Iran and Yemen most ec0-genocidally.

The US backed and armed Saudi bombing of Yemen and mass famine as a weapon of war is more brutal to civilians than in Vietnam, and on behalf of the more despotic and anti-democratic Islamic theocracy of Saudi Arabia.

Yet how many know that it is this same illegal US embargo war against Iran and accompanying armed terror against its oil trading partners that has caused Canada’s disastrous rift with China and its refusal to purchase long-time major Canada agricultural exports to China now ruining Western farmers?

We have been told the story-line by Canada’s government and the media that the now long imprisonment of lead China businesswoman Meng Wanzhou is “strictly abiding by the rule of law” and “China cannot or does not want to understand how the rule of law works”.

In fact, the detention is of the CFO of China’s world-leading telecommunications giant, Huawei, occurred as Huawei was surpassing the long US monopoly giants in global sales, and while the Trump administration was – and remains – in the midst of other strong-arm trade sanctions on China to recover lost market shares to now more competitive Chinese industries.

The fact that it is US corporations themselves which have shipped American jobs en masse to China – predicted by critics of the borderless transnational corporate trade regime throughout – is reverse-blamed on China as the US is silently in trouble even in cell-phone communications where it has long dominated world trade.

Trump has implicitly acknowledged that the US demand for extradition of Meng Wanzhou is part of his trade war with China, and that – mighty white of him – he might work for the release of two Canadians imprisoned in response (for which pervasive Foreign Affairs  Minister Freeland, who has presided over this whole disaster for Canada, unctuously – and futilely – thanked him for nothing).

Minister Freeland has long pretended the fit-up arrest and detention of Huawei’s CEO Meng Wanzhou in transit at a Canadian airport has been to uphold ‘the rule of law’ as sacred. Yet the extraterritorial state arrest is in fact only obeying a US extradition warrant for Huawei’s alleged violation of the US’s illegal trade war on Iran!

That this extra-territorial demand is for no offense committed under Canada or international law is not reported even by the press. That the offense alleged is against an illegal US embargo of Iran by export controls to which Canada is not a party is deleted across government accounts and the media.

At the same time, Trump’s royal love-in with new Saudi tyrant Muhammad bin Salman (with Boris Johnson joining in) backs and arms the eco-genocidal destruction of neighboring Yemen, now the poorest and most war-oppressed country in the world

Needless to say, background editors of what can be spoken on the public stage ensure at every level that no joining of the dots here is allowed.  That Canada has supplied the Saudi war of aggression and mass starvation with billions worth of armored trucks, once a front-end issue, disappears from what accounts there are of the genocidal war presented by acting Saudi-king bin Salman as quick national victory.

Even although the establishment media and politicos may hate Trump, they know that US bully and vassal Canada waging corporate state war on poorer, not-fully-capitalist countries is taboo to know even for them.

It is one more dirty-secret accumulation of interconnected evils and lies out of sight under which the Creation increasingly groans. SOURCE

Andrew Scheer Just Announced a Sneaky Campaign Promise That Would Let Rich Canadians Dodge Taxes

“This is very blatantly a tax break for millionaires”

Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives have a sneaky plan that would let rich Canadians avoid taxes by using numbered companies as a tax loophole.

This week, the Conservative leader held a campaign event where he pledged his “support to small businesses” through a couple of tax changes, except he left a few important details out of his announcement.

What Scheer portrayed as tax relief for small business owners was, in reality, a plan to reopen a pair of tax loopholes that have been exploited by millionaires who use private corporations to make money off stock markets and real estate.

Two things Scheer is promising to do include bringing back “income sprinkling,” a tax scheme that allows owners of private corporations to “sprinkle” income to their children and spouses, and also — more significantly — change the way passive income is taxed.

Kevin Milligan@kevinmilligan

Today’s @CPC_HQ announcement *brings back* income sprinkling, and allows firms with $1million+ of assets to
shelter their savings in ways not available to other Canadians.

These proposals clearly benefit the highest earners who have private corps.https://www.conservative.ca/scheer-pledges-support-to-small-businesses/

View image on Twitter
Passive income generally refers to the income made off investments, as opposed to the money an ordinary business makes selling goods and services.

Scheer’s plan allows wealthy Canadians who run personal investments through a numbered company to be taxed at a lower small business tax rate, rather than the normal personal tax rate.

“This is very blatantly a tax break for millionaires,” Toby Sanger, Executive Director of Canadians for Tax Fairness, told PressProgress.

Sanger said Scheer’s tax scheme would easily cost “over half a billion dollars.” MORE

The Affordability Crisis and the 2019 Election

In March, the Broadbent Institute commissioned a study from Abacus Data to explore how Canadians feel about present-day affordability concerns. Highlights of its findings paints a bleak picture:

    • 1 in 4 Canadians say that issues such as money, taxes and housing are keeping them up at night;

    • Nearly 60 percent ranked issues tied to cost of living (wages, taxes, healthcare) as their top issues heading into the federal election;

    • Found there was a direct correlation between household income and concern about the cost of living; and,

    • When asked what would make a difference to make life more affordable, a majority felt that covering more under public health care such as dental, prescriptions, and home care, as well as access to decent work and wages would be most helpful.

Overall, the study found that Canadians have a general feeling of ‘affordability anxiety’ leading into the federal election.

For this reason, the Broadbent Institute has created a series of fact sheets that look into three major issues effecting affordability — housing, healthcare and taxes, during the federal election. With poll after poll, including our own, showing that affordability may be the top ballot box issue voters are faced with; each fact sheet will include information on a topic as it relates to affordability and the commitments and/or solutions each party has put forward.

Ocean cleanup device successfully collects plastic for first time

Floating boom finally retains debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, creator says

The boom skims up waste ranging in size from a discarded net and a car wheel to tiny chips of plastic. Photograph: AP

A huge floating device designed by Dutch scientists to clean up an island of rubbish in the Pacific Ocean that is three times the size of France has successfully picked up plastic from the high seas for the first time.

Boyan Slat, the creator of the Ocean Cleanup project, tweeted that the 600 metre-long (2,000ft) free-floating boom had captured and retained debris from what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Alongside a picture of the collected rubbish, which includes a car wheel, Slat wrote: “Our ocean cleanup system is now finally catching plastic, from one-ton ghost nets to tiny microplastics! Also, anyone missing a wheel?”

About 600,000 to 800,000 metric tonnes of fishing gear is abandoned or lost at sea each year. Another 8m tonnes of plastic waste flows in from beaches.

Ocean currents have brought a vast patch of such detritus together halfway between Hawaii and California, where it is kept in rough formation by an ocean gyre, a whirlpool of currents. It is the largest accumulation of plastic in the world’s oceans.

Crew members sort through plastic onboard a support vessel in the Pacific.

The vast cleaning system is designed to not only collect discarded fishing nets and large visible plastic objects, but also microplastics.

The plastic barrier floating on the surface of the sea has a three metre-deep (10ft) screen below it, which is intended to trap some of the 1.8tn pieces of plastic without disturbing the marine life below.

The device is fitted with transmitters and sensors so it can communicate its position via satellites to a vessel that will collect the gathered rubbish every few months. MORE
